The second verse of Surah Al-Fajr — وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ (“And by the ten nights”) — is understood by the overwhelming majority of classical scholars, including Ibn Abbas, Ibn Kathir, and Al-Qurtubi, to refer to the first ten nights of Dhul Hijjah, the most sacred days in the Islamic calendar.

وَٱلْفَجْرِ ‎﴿١﴾‏ وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ

Wal-fajr. Wa layālin ‘ashr.

“By the dawn. And by the ten nights.” (Al-Fajr 89:1–2)

Allah taking an oath by these ten nights signals their extraordinary weight. Surah Al-Fajr presents three destroyed civilizations as direct evidence of divine justice in operation: ‘Ad, the people of Prophet Hud built with unmatched physical power; Thamud, who carved their homes into mountains; and Pharaoh (Fir’awn), the archetype of political tyranny and claimed divinity.

أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعَادٍ

Alam tara kayfa fa’ala rabbuka bi-‘Ād

“Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with ‘Ad” (Al-Fajr 89:6)

The rhetorical question — “Have you not considered?” — is directed at the listener personally. This is not historical narration for its own sake. The Quran is asking: you have seen what happened to those who corrupted the earth and exceeded all limits — so where do you stand?

The Arabic phrase

الَّذِينَ طَغَوۡا فِى ٱلۡبِلَـٰدِ (“those who transgressed throughout the lands”)

connects all three nations to a single cause of destruction: tughyan — exceeding divinely set limits.

فَأَمَّا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ إِذَا مَا ٱبْتَلَىٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ فَأَكْرَمَهُۥ وَنَعَّمَهُۥ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّىٓ أَكْرَمَنِ وَأَمَّا إِذَا مَا ابْتَلَاهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقَهُ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّي أَهَانَنِ

Fa-ammal insānu idhā mabtalāhu rabbuhu fa-akramahu wa-na”amahu fa-yaqūlu rabbī akraman

“And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, “My Lord has honored me.” (15) But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, “My Lord has humiliated me.'” (Al-Fajr 89:15 – 16)

The Surah immediately follows this with its counterpart: when provision is restricted, the same person says, “My Lord has humiliated me.” This is the false equation the Surah corrects — wealth is not proof of divine approval, and hardship is not proof of divine abandonment.

Yā ayyatuhan-nafsul-mutma’innah. Irji’ī ilā rabbiki rāḍiyatam-marḍiyyah. Fadkhulī fī ‘ibādī. Wadkhulī jannatī.

“O reassured soul, return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him], and enter among My servants and enter My Paradise.” (Al-Fajr 89:27–30)

The nafs al-mutma’innah is the soul that has found rest through iman, remembrance of Allah, and patient surrender to divine decree. Ibn Kathir notes in his Tafsir that this address will be given to the believer at the moment of death — a moment of profound peace rather than fear.
