Al-Madd Al-Aarid Lilssukoon

Al-Madd Al-Aarid Lissukoon

For maintaining a balanced, expressive, melodic recitation of the Qur’an, you should be attentive enough for applying the proper Madd in its certain cases.  As known, there are various types of Madd; each of them has its own rule and part in keeping the due, meaningful rhythm of the Qur’an.

Among those types that you need to know about is Madd ‘Aarid Lilsukoon. Here, we are going to have a look at this type of Madd: its definition, types, examples, and so on.

The Definition of Mad ‘Aaridh Lillsukoon:

Madd ‘Aaridh Lillsukoon can be defined as that temporary elongation caused by a temporary sukoon, due to temporary pausing, on the last letter of the word, which is preceded by a Madd-Letter. So, it can be called (The Temporary-Sukoon-Elongation). It takes 2, 4, or 6 counts, yet 4 counts are those considered the intermediate pace of recitation.

Originally, following the Madd-letter, that last letter of the word comes with a vowel, whether a damma, fat-ha, or kasra, pronounced when keeping reciting the ayahs; yet, in Madd ‘Aaridh lillsukoon, this original vowel of the last letter is replaced with a temporary sukoon, due to pausing at that word, like at the end of the ayahs.

The Types of Madd ‘Aaridh lillsukoon:

Madd ‘Aaridh Lillsukoon, itself, is one of the secondary types of Madd; it occurs only when temporary sukoon pops up, due to pausing, and vanishes when going on reciting.

The types of Madf ‘Aaridh Lillsukoon can be categorized on its original cases, as follows:

Whose Original Madd Is Madd Tab’ie (Natural Madd):

The original case here is that there is a Madd-letter which is preceded by a corresponding vowel, like ي  preceded by a kasra, ا  preceded by fat-ha, and و  preceded by dhamma.

Example:

الأوتَاد / Al Awtaaaadd/ -الدٍين /Ad-Deeeen/ – تفعلُون  /taf’aloooon/.

When not stopping, we elongate the Madd-Letter for 2 counts, as natural, and when stopping, we elongate it for 2, 4, or 6 counts, yet 4 counts are the common, intermediate style of recitation.

Whose Original Madd Is Madd Leen:

The Original case here is Madd Leen where the Madd-Letter, whether ي , or و, is not voweled, (sakin), and preceded by a consonant voweled with fat-ha:

Example:

البَيْت /Al-Bayyyyt/- الخَوْف  /Al Khaoooof/

When pausing at those words, we apply Madd ‘Aaridh Lillsukoon, elongating the Madd-letter for 2, 4, or 6 counts, while not elongating it, while keeping reciting.

Whose Original Madd Is Madd Badal:

The original case here is Madd Al-Badal where the hamza comes before the Madd-Letter. When pausing at Madd Badal, we elongate the Madd-letter for 2, 4, or 6 counts:

Example:

 يراؤون  /yura’oooon/ -خاطئين  /Khat’eeeen/.

Whose Original Madd Is Wajib-Mutassil Ended with Hamza:

When pausing at the Wajib, Mutassil Madd ended with hamza, we elongate the Madd-letter for 4,5, or 6 counts; when, we don’t pause at it, we naturally elongate it for 4, or 5 counts.

Example:

 يشاء  /yasha’aaaa/- بالسوء  /bilsoooo’/.
