In the journey of learning Qur’an, tajweed is a prerequisite to know how to accurately recite the Holy Qur’an, Allah’s Message to all mankind. It is that meaningful, linguistic knowledge that enables you to articulate the Qur’an precisely right, avoiding all of the possible pronunciation-mistakes that can happen, due to the various dialects, and even languages.
No one can deny how crucial is that role of the informative, easy-to-understand books of tajweed; they are such practical, clarifying, and structural guidelines that the learner can rely on, to clearly understand the tajweed techniques theoretically, and to attentively apply those techniques practically, during reciting Qur’an. “Reach the Goal Via Tajweed Rules” is one of those practical books that you can refer to, in your learning of tajweed. Let’s show an overview of this book.
Table of Contents
About the Book:
Reach the Goal Via Tajweed Rules Book provides simple tajweed-guidelines and gradual steps to take, starting with the basics of tajweed that must be applied by all, and till those higher-leveled techniques. It is 49 pages, by Maha Rashid.
Maha started with a brief about tajweed, its history, importance, and its growing necessity, along with the growing numbers of those becoming Muslims, not knowing how to exactly pronounce the Qur’an. Yet, Maha did not say that only applying tajweed while reciting Qur’an is obligatory to each and every Muslim, but also learning all its details theoretically, too.
In the book introduction, Maha points over the prophetic hadiths, emphasizing the significance and rewards of learning tajweed to the Muslim. Then, she moved to the basic tajweed rules, one by one, simply explaining each by clarifying examples to practice. There is a list of tajweed techniques that is covered by the book, in an easy-to-understand way.
The List of Tajweed Techniques in the Book:
As said, the book explains gradually the most common, basic tajweed techniques, reaching into the most advanced ones. Here are the tajweed rules, mentioned in the book, in order:
- Noon and Meem Mushadadd.
- Alqalqalah.
- The Heavy and the Light Letters.
- Lam in “Allah”
- Raa, being Heavy and Light.
- Noon Sakinnah and Tanween: (Izhaar Halqy- Iqlab- Idgham- Ikhfaa Haqiqi- Chart of Noon Sakinnah and Tanween.)
- How to Pronounce Each Rule.
- Meem Sakinnah. (Ikhfaa Shafawy- Idgham Mutamathileen Sagheer- Izhar Shafawy- Chart of Meem Sakin.)
- Al-Madd: Madd Tabe’ee- Madd ‘Ewad- Madd Badal- Madd ‘Aridh Lillsukon- Madd Leen- Madd Wajeb Mutassil- Madd Ja’ez Munfasel- Madd Lazzim: Kalimi Muthaqqal and Mukhafaff, and Harfi Muthaqqal, and Mukhaff- Chart of Madd.
- Stopping at the End of the Words.
- Siffat Al-Huruf ( The Qualities of letters):
The Weak Points of the Book:
Yes, it is a good book for the beginners, yet there are some weak points that are detected:
1. Overstressing on All of the Tajweed-Rules as Individual Obligation:
Actually, stressful, and overwhelming to the learner is this stating that learning all of the tajweed-rules are an individual obligation. Yes, we are commanded by Allah to perfect our recitation of the Qur’an, by applying the basic tajweed rules, avoiding any remarkable mistake of pronunciation (Lahn Jallyy), as such mistake can mess up the whole meaning of the ayah, and in turn, in the Qur’anic message!
However, as most scholars agreed upon, learning all the tajweed rules- even the most detailed- is a group obligation (Fardh Kifayah), to be done by a group of Muslims as needed. In turn, those tajweed-specialized teachers are able to teach all the tajweed techniques, even those subtle ones that can be unintentionally overlooked by the usual learner.
Of course, Allah the Almighty, rewards us, as long as we do our best, and try our hardest, to perfect our recitation of His Holy Book, the Qur’an. The The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “The one who is proficient in the recitation of the Qur’an will be with the honourable and obedient scribes (angels) and he who recites the Qur’an and finds it difficult to recite, doing his best to recite it in the best way possible, will have two rewards.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
2. Not Stressing on the Main Goal:
The overstressing of the tajweed rules came at the expense of the main goal of tajweed, itself, which is to clearly understand Allah’s Message to us, and to follow the Qur’an’s teachings, lessons, and guidance. Yes, tajweed is critical to fully understand the Qur’an’s meanings, yet tajweed, in itself, is not the goal; rather, it is one of the main means to reach the goal of contemplating the Qur’an right, as a divine bond with Allah.
There are other means too, besides learning the Qur’anic Arabic and its tajweed-codes, for that honorable goal; Arab and non-Arab Muslims can read Sunnah and Sirah, in whatever language needed then, as Sunnah explains the Qur’an, and also, tafseer, (interpretation for the Qur’an). Understanding the message of the Qur’an is the fruit of those knowledge roots. So, yes, tajweed is one of the main knowledge to seek for understanding Qur’an, but not the only.
3. Not Explaining the Letters Articulation-Points (Makharij Al-Huruf):
No good resource of tajweed-learning should overlook such an important lesson of Makharij Al-Huruf, as right pronunciation of any letter relies on both its exact articulation-point, and its attribute. Maha mentioned Makharij Al-Huruf in the introduction, but not in the later explanations! Although, she already explained the letters’ attributes.

The Strong Points of the Book:
Although there are some weak points, like everything, there are also good points of this book, making it one of the recommended tajweed-learning books in English. They are as follows:
1. Informative Introduction for Learning Tajweed:
In the introduction of the book, Maha mentioned some foundational points about tajweed, like its definition, its history, its purpose, its ruling, and so on, besides some helpful tips for learning tajweed. That introduction mindfully prepares the learner to recall his intention of learning tajweed, and to take tajweed seriously, as he should.
2. Simple to Study and Remember the Tajweed Rules:
Maha stated the tajweed rules with simple, clear explanations, without delving into excessive, unneeded details. That helps the learner to focus on the main points, without getting confused. Also, clarifying examples are provided, which facilitates applying the rules, and practicing them.
3. Illustrative Charts:
There is a good usage of the studying charts, along the whole book, as they simply sum up the tajweed rule details in one page to remember, and that is great for the beginner, no to get distracted or lost in the previous explanations.
4. Good Coverage of the Rule of Stopping at the Words’ Ends:
It is remarkably good and recommended for non-Arabs learners, as the book helps them to know how to stop properly at the words’ ends, with easy examples to practice; it only misses the distinction between the open ت, and the closed one ة.
5. “How to Pronounce” Part:
The book includes ‘how to pronounce’, and that is so useful to the learner, as it provides him with the practical steps to correctly pronounce the rules of noon sakinna, and tanween, with an easy, clear way that the beginner can actually follow and practice.
