Certainly, as parents, we are ever willing and ready to help our dear children whenever they ask. Yet, we can’t always be there for them in every step they take in their lives. After all, we are just humans with limited power, limited time, and limited wisdom. We, ourselves, no matter how old we get, need support in our daily life situations.
Therefore, the mindful Muslim is the one who really recognizes his own limitedness as a human being, and the limitlessness of Allah, The Creator, The Wise, The All-Knowing, The All-Capable; Allah Almighty says to anything “Be” and it is! So, the heedful Muslim is keen on keeping his spiritual connection to his Lord by worshipping Him in all various ways; that faithful relationship is what already strengthens, empowers, and leads the Muslim to succeed all along his life, and in the hereafter, too.
Without a doubt, as much as the Muslim parent cares for himself, he cares for his child- if not even way more! Therefore, he always tries to connect his child to the Lord, since his childhood, as it guarantees his well-being, protection, and success in this life, and the hereafter. Here comes the uniqueness of dua’ as an easy, inspiring act of worship that you can teach your child, since his early years; dua’ connects your child spiritually to his Lord, opening for him all the gates of good. Let’s have a look at dua’s significance in Islam, and some of dua’ to teach your kid.

Dua’ to Teach Your Kid:
Before teaching your kid dua’, you need to draw his attention first to its significance and power in his life, as we mentioned in the previous lines. That will make him instantly recall how much he actually needs to make dua’, and how rewarding it is to mention Allah throughout the day and night; that, in turn, purifies his soul and adjusts his attention for seeking Allah’s support, and pleasure. Dua’, itself, makes him sure that Allah, The Gracious, already inspires him to make dua’, so He, The Generous, will answer it, Insha’Allah; “Verily your Lord is Generous and Shy. If His servant raises his hands to Him (in supplication) He becomes shy to return them empty.” (Ahmad, Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi).
Another point to tell your kid about is that no matter how small, or seemingly ‘a daily thing’ to ask for, he can always make dua’ for it; that keeps your child in touch with his Lord, even in the slightest matters in life: Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to tell the Companions: “Let one of you ask his Lord for everything that he needs, even a lace for his shoe if it breaks.”
Here are some important dua’ to teach your kid, through day and night:
Dua’ When Waking Up:
”All praise belongs to Allah Who has restored us back to life after causing us to die; and to Him shall we return.” [Hadith | Bukhari – 7394]
/As-bah-na wa as-ba-hal mulku lil-lahi rabbil-aa-la-mîn. Allahumma innî as’aluka khay-ra ha-zal-yawm, fat-ha-hu wa nas-ra-hu, wa nu-ra-hu wa bara-ka-ta-hu wa hu-da-hu, Wa aa-u-zu bika min shar-ri ma fîhi, wa shar-ri ma ba’-dah/
“We have entered upon the morning, and the whole kingdom of Allah, too, has entered upon morning. Praise is due to Allah. There is none who has the right to be worshiped but Allah, the One who has no partner with Him. His is the Sovereignty and to Him is praise due and He is Potent over everything. My Lord, I beg of Thee good that lies in this day and good that follows it and I seek refuge in Thee from the evil that lies in this day and from the evil of that which follows it.”
For Protection All Day:
/Bismillahil-ladhi la yadurru ma’ is-mihi shai’un fil-ardi wa la fis-sama’i,
wa Huwas-Sami’ul-‘Alim/
“In the Name of Allah with Whose Name there is protection against every kind of harm in the earth or in the heaven, and He is the All-Hearing and All- Knowing.”
For Gratitude for Allah’s Blessings:
/Allāhumma mā aṣbaha bī min ni`matinaw bi aḥadin min khalqik. fa minka waḥdaka lā sharīka lak. falaka ‘l-ḥamdu wa lakash-shukr./
“O Allah, whatever blessing has been received by me or anyone of Your creation is from You alone, You have no partner. All praise is for you and thanks is to You.”

When Feeling Lazy to Do Something:
/Lā ilāha illallāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lah. lahu ‘l-mulku walahu ‘l-ḥamd. wa huwa `alā kulli shay’in qadīr./
“None has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, Who has no partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise and He is Able to do all things.”
When Doing Something Difficult:
/Allahumma la sahla illa ma ja’altahu sahla, wa ‘anta taj’alul hazna idha shi’ta sahla./
“O Allah, there is no ease except in what You make easy. If You wish, You can make the difficulty easy.”
When Studying:
/Rabbi zidni ilma./
[My Lord, increase me in knowledge.]| Surah At-Taha:114]
Before, and After Eating:
/Bismillah, wa ‘ala barakat Allah/
“In the name of Allah and with the blessings of Allah, I begin (eating)”.
After Eating
/Alhamdulillah alathe at’amana wa saqana wa ja’lna Muslimeen/
“All praise belongs to Allah, who fed us, quenched our thirst, and made us Muslims.”
For the Bathroom
/a’otho men al-khobs wa al-khabaa’eth/
“O Allah, I seek refuge with you from all evil and evil-doers.”
After Using the Bathroom:
/Ahamdulillah althe athhab ‘ana al-atha wa ‘afana/
“Praise be to Allah, who removed the difficulty from me and gave me ease (relief).”
Before Leaving the House:
“In the Name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no might nor power except with Allah.”
When Going to bed:
/Bismeka Allahuma amooto wa ahya/
“With Your Name, O Allah, I die, and I live.”
Note:
Also, teach your kid to always say “Bismillah” (in the Name of Allah) before doing anything, “Alhamdulillah” (praise be to Allah) for thanking Allah for His blessings, and “Astaghfiru Allah” (I ask for Allah’s forgiveness) after making a mistake.
Also, teach him to make dua’ for those giving or helping him with anything, by saying “Jazakum Allah Khairan” (may Allah reward you).
