Why Do We Read the Quran?

People read the Qur’an for one or more of the following purposes:

1. Obtaining good deeds. The prophet Muhammed (PBUH) stated,

“Whoever reads a letter from the Book of God will receive a good deed for it, and a good deed is ten times greater.” I do not state, “Free pain F,” yet Alif, Laam, and Meem are letters.

When a Muslim recites a book, Lord, the more letters there are, the more good acts will occur.

2. For the psychological calm that the Qur’an reciter has become accustomed to; reading it expels despair, worry, and distress, and the reader experiences tranquility and comfort.

3. For healing, {And We send down of the Qur’an that which is a healing and a mercy for the believers, and it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss} Al-Isra: 82.

The recovery from mental health issues and the underlying physical problems they cause.

4. To speak with the Almighty Creator. The Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) said:

“Allah does not listen to anything as He listens to the recitation of the Qur’ān by a Prophet who recites the Qur’ān audibly and melodiously”

5. To become fully aware of all the laws that govern the universe. Allah said: {That was Allah’s way with those ˹hypocrites˺ who have gone before. And you will find no change in Allah’s way.}

Knowing these rules helps us make sense of the world around us and teaches us how to get out of sticky situations.

Is Reading Quran Fard Or Sunnah?

In Islamic law, it is important to distinguish between Sunnah, which is recommended, and Fard, which is required. When it comes to obligations, like as the five daily prayers or fasting during Ramadan, reading the Quran itself is not considered as a Fard

However, Reading Quran is a highly recommended worship on a regular basis to sustain the spiritual well-being and keep connected to Allah’s guidance.

Abu Umama said he heard Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) say: Recite the Qur’an, for on the Day of Resurrection it will come as an intercessor for those who recite It. Recite the two bright ones, al-Baqara and Surah Al ‘Imran, for on the Day of Resurrection they will come as two clouds or two shades, or two flocks of birds in ranks, pleading for those who recite them. Recite Surah al-Baqara, for to take recourse to it is a blessing and to give it up is a cause of grief, and the magicians cannot confront it.

Unfortunately, it’s rare right now to find many Muslims reading the Quran every day, though, they are unaware that they neglect one of the finest deeds (hasanat) they can perform.

The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: “[Whoever recites a letter] from Allah’s Book, then he receives the reward from it, and the reward of ten the like of it. I do not say that Alif Lam Mim is a letter, but Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter and Mim is a letter.”
